Vasi Philomin is currently a Vice President in the AWS AI team for services in the language and speech technologies areas such as Amazon Lex, Amazon Polly, Amazon Translate, Amazon Transcribe/Transcribe Medical, Amazon Comprehend, Amazon Kendra, Amazon Code Whisperer, Amazon Monitron, Amazon Lookout for Equipment and Contact Lens/Voice ID for Amazon Connect as well as Machine Learning Solutions Lab. Prior to joining Amazon, he spent most of his career creating new high-tech businesses inside Philips as part of the corporate venturing strategy of the company aimed at organic growth. He has held various management positions across all functions including General Management, Business Development, Marketing and R&D over the last two decades and was the Public Segment Leader at Philips Lighting before he joined Amazon. In that role, he was responsible for a 300M$ global systems business focused on public sector customers and grew the business through innovations in “Connected Lighting” at 35%+ y.o.y for multiple years in a declining B2B market environment. Key project wins included connected lighting installations in the City of Los Angeles, Jakarta Indonesia, Perth Stadium, Allianz Arena, Bay Bridge in San Francisco, Tapanzee bridge, Empire State Building and Madison Square Garden. He is an entrepreneur at heart and has a very deep understanding of the software and services industry. This coupled with his ability to innovate on business models has helped him make valuable contributions to diverse businesses, covering areas such as Robotics and 3D content creation for cinema. He holds a Ph.D. degree in Computer Science (Computer Vision/Machine Learning specialization) and two Master’s degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Computer Science from the University of Maryland, College Park, USA as well as 75+ US patents.
